The Social Justice Leadership Institute

The Social Justice Leadership Institute (SJLI) is the next step in the development of leaders and citizen scholars at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  Student Development and departments and individuals from across SIUC have recognized a need to do more to prepare our students for life beyond SIUC and partnered to develop a program to further enhance the educational experience and social consciousness of our students. Through workshops, reflective and interactive exercises, small group dialogues and the development and expansion of critical thinking skills participants will acquire the knowledge and skills to realize, examine, question, communicate with, understand and ultimately influence the systems of power, privilege and oppression that are part of every individual’s life whether consciously or unconsciously acknowledged.  The experience will be intense, require commitment and shall teach individuals how to be an even better agent for improvement. A rigorous interview and selection process will provide the inaugural class of SJLI participants. Highlights of the 2009-2010 SJLI include the program P2O: Privilege, Power and Oppression, a powerfully moving, interactive program that brings to the forefront the systems of power, privilege and oppression, and a lecture by the popular and well renowned social activist Mr. Tim Wise.
Application deadline: November 16
