Land of Lincoln AmeriCorps: SIUC

SIUC participates in Land of Lincoln AmeriCorps, the National Service program. The program is supported by a grant from the Serve Illinois Commission and the Corporation for National Service in Washington D.C. AmeriCorps follows a long tradition of national service where dedicated, civic-minded Americans provide service to their country and communities.

Members selected for the Land of Lincoln AmeriCorps serve as tutors and mentors to children in grade ages pre-K to eight in four school districts. The AmeriCorps strive work to increase literacy and academic skill , model good behavior as a mentor and to promote a positive view of education. AmeriCorps members have the opportunities for leadership development, represent the program at state level conferences, and plan special service projects during the year.  Members who successfully complete their first year can choose to return in the program for a second year. All majors can apply for the program. It is a unique opportunity that can be life-changing for the students who get selected. We are one of few schools with an AmeriCorps program!! Make a difference by joining AmeriCorps!!

AmeriCorps helps to give my life purpose and direction. I decided to do a second year because there is no better feeling than contributing to something bigger than myself

Cale Fields, Senior in Microbiology, Peoria, IL
I joined AmeriCorps because I enjoy making a positive difference in my community and working for a good cause.

Toni Manzella, Senior in Social Work, New Lennox, IL
I decided to come back for a 2nd year with AmeriCorps becaue I really enjoy having a direct impact on the youth in Carbondale. Being in AmeriCorps has changed my life in so many ways and I can’t wait to see what this year brings.

Paul Beckmeyer, Junior in History, Irvington, IL
It seems to me that there is much suffering in the world today, and AmeriCorps gave me the opportunity to ease this universal suffering, if only in a limited environment, to the most of my abilities.

Lori Jones, Senior in Elementary Education, Belleville, IL
I wanted to join AmeriCorps because I knew it would give me the opportunity to work with children in the community and allow me to help make a positive difference in both their academics and their self-confidence.

Lindsay VanBrocklin, Sophomore in Political Science, Bloomington, IL
My decision to join AmeriCorps was driven simply by a desire to server our community. I believe college is the ideal time in life to gain insight on becoming an effective and engaged citizen. Working with children and encouraging them to do well in school not only prepares them for a bright future but reminds me on a daily basis not to take my education for granted.

Brandon Anim, MEDPREP program, Savannah, GA
I joined AmeriCorps to make a positive difference as a male role model in my community.

Raymone Flemming, Senior in University Studies, Chicago, IL
The reason I chose to join AmeriCorps for a second year was not only to better my community, but to also better myself.

Kara Reed, Senior in Biological Sciences, Evansville,IN
I joined AmeriCorps because I knew it would be a great way to become activley involved in my community. AmeriCorps brings people together and I definitely wanted to be a part of this program.
